How do you write a brief for a Roblox project?
The brief is judged on four things: the objective, the audience age, the player action and the date. Everything else is detail a studio can fill in.
A studio can price a good brief in a day and will spend three weeks guessing at a bad one. Four things decide which you have written.
1. One objective and one metric
Reach, leads, loyalty or dwell time — pick one and name the number that proves it moved. Briefs with four objectives produce worlds that do four things badly.
2. The audience age, written as a number
This decides more than any creative choice. It governs which advertising categories are open to you, what claims the creative can make, and how the world itself has to be designed. How audience age changes what you can advertise sets out where the lines fall.
Write the age you are actually targeting, including the players who will arrive anyway on an open platform.
3. The player action
One sentence: what the person does inside. Not the theme, not the mood — the verb. If you cannot write it, the brief is not ready, and choosing a mechanic is the step you are missing.
4. The date and what it is attached to
A launch tied to a season, a product drop or a campaign flight behaves differently from an always-on presence. Say which, because it reshapes the budget, the live-ops plan and the shape of the build.
What else earns its place
Markets and languages, since localisation is a build decision and a late one is expensive.
Integrations: promo codes, CRM, loyalty. These are separate engineering and they need naming early.
Brand assets you already hold — 3D models, characters, a sound identity — and the rights attached to them.
Approval chain: who signs off, and how long each pass takes. Studios plan around it once they know.
Hard constraints: legal red lines, category rules, anything that cannot appear.
What to leave out
Reference worlds you liked with no note on why. Mood boards standing in for a mechanic. A visits target set before anyone has estimated traffic, which produces a number nobody can commit to and everyone is later judged against.
The test before you send it
Read the brief and try to describe the player’s first thirty seconds. Arrived, saw, understood, pressed. If any step is missing, the studio will invent it, and you will be reviewing their guess at your idea.
Roblox game development for brands that need it to work
Hiring a freelance Roblox developer gets you a place. Getting a world that people return to is a production problem — gameplay, economy, live-ops and analytics designed together, before the first block is placed.
