Who owns a Roblox world after the project is delivered?
The world belongs to whoever's group published it, regardless of who paid for development. What to put in the contract so the asset stays with the brand.
The world belongs to the owner of the group it was published under. Paying for development does not by itself confer rights over the published experience, which is why this is settled by contract and by group setup before work starts.
How it works technically
Every experience on Roblox is attached to an account or a group. Publishing under the contractor’s group makes the contractor the owner in the platform’s terms, whatever your contract says.
The contract still exists and still operates in law. But while the asset sits in someone else’s group, every action on it requires that someone’s participation.
What belongs in the contract
Group ownership. The group belongs to the brand, with a company account as owner.
Rights to source files. Project files, scripts and 3D models transfer to the client.
Rights to assets. Every model, sound and image was created by the contractor or licensed with the right to transfer. The list is attached to the handover document.
Analytics access. The brand holds its own access to the creator dashboard.
Handover procedure. What exactly transfers at delivery, and within what timeframe.
A separate note on UGC items
Avatar items released as part of a project follow marketplace rules and attach to the account that uploaded them. Cover them as a separate clause, or they stay with whoever pressed upload.
What to do if the project was already delivered the wrong way
Transferring a published experience between owners is possible. It is a negotiation plus a technical procedure, and it goes more smoothly the better your relationship with the contractor.
Which is the practical argument for settling ownership at contract stage, while both sides are motivated to agree.
The simple test before signing
Ask: if we change studios tomorrow, what exactly do we keep and what has to be rebuilt? A clear answer to that question is a sign of a sound contractor.
A Roblox marketing agency that ships worlds, not decks
Most agencies sell you a Roblox strategy and hand the build to someone else. We do both, and we are judged on the same number you are: how many people showed up and how long they stayed.
