Can a city or tourism board promote a destination on Roblox?
Travel advertising is open with two exclusions below 13: adults-oriented travel and extreme adventure travel. Destinations have an advantage here — the place itself is the mechanic.
Destination marketing fits the platform unusually well, because a place is already a space, and a space is what Roblox is built out of.
What the rules exclude
Where the intended audience includes users under 13, ads may not promote travel or tourism primarily intended for adults — adults-only resorts and cruises are the named examples.
Extreme or high-risk adventure travel is prohibited for that audience too, with mountain climbing expeditions named.
Ads may not promote events organised in spaces that primarily facilitate or encourage alcohol, tobacco or drug consumption. That rules out a good deal of nightlife-led city marketing.
There is a useful exception in the clothing rules: swimwear may be depicted in the context of promoting travel, which most beach destinations need.
What a destination has that a product brand does not
Geography that converts directly. Landmarks, routes and neighbourhoods become navigation and discovery without translation.
A calendar. Festivals, seasons and public holidays give a recurring reason to return, which is the hardest thing for a branded world to manufacture.
Local culture as content. Food, music, craft and language are mechanics in their own right, and they localise naturally — see localising a Roblox world for how that plays out in practice.
The formats that work
A walkable version of the place with things to do at each stop, quests attached to real locations, and a collectible set that maps to the itinerary a visitor would actually take.
Seasonal events tied to the real calendar, so the world has a reason to be updated and a reason to be revisited.
Measuring something that converts years later
A tourism board is talking to people who will travel in five to ten years, so first-year bookings are the wrong measure. Ask for time in world, return rate, and completion of the routes you care about. Those tell you whether the place registered.
Where the budget usually goes wrong
Recreating the whole city. Pick three or four locations, make each one do something, and leave room in the budget for the events that bring people back.
Roblox for tourism: the destination people visit twice
A destination is the most literal thing a virtual world can be. The audience walks your streets, does your quests — and files the place under "somewhere I have been", years before the passport.
